In October 1980, a covert operation delayed the release of the American hostages in Iran that sabotaged Jimmy Carter’s bid for reelection as U.S. President.
The covert operation is known as the October Surprise. Participants included George Herbert Walker Bush, who helped arrange the deal with the Iranians on behalf of Ronald Reagan’s Presidential campaign team, and Rayelan Allan’s second husband, Gunther Russbacher, who piloted the plane that transported Mr. Bush to-and-from the negotiation site in Paris.
