Historical tidbit: Sidley Austin represented G.D. Searle, the infamous aspartame manufacturer which was the subject of the 1977 grand jury investigation of its safety tests that was initiated by the FDA. In keeping with the cozy revolving-door policy that exists between corporate monoliths and government regulators, the U.S. Attorney originally in charge of the Searle investigation, Samuel Skinner, went to work for Searle’s law firm on July 1, 1977. Skinner’s departure stalls the Searle grand jury investigation for so long that the statute of limitations on the aspartame charges runs out.
