Field McConnell began his in-depth study of this seminal event when the local paper, the Fargo Forum, called him at home during the early afternoon of 9-11-2001. The reporter talked about 40 minutes, then asked if Field could be photographed for a front-page story. The Fargo Forum, a Pulitzer Prize-winning daily based in Fargo ND, sent a photographer to McConnell’s farm near Glyndon, MN, 13 miles east of Fargo. On 9-12-2001 the headline was, “Our Nation Saw Evil,” and included photographs of the World Trade Center rubble, Osama Bin Laden, President George W. Bush, and Field McConnell.

The newspaper was very familiar with McConnell’s background as a Lt. Colonel and aviation pilot who had flown the F4 Phantom and F16 Falcon during his 16 years of duty with the North Dakota ANG. His inclusion in that day’s headline news story clearly demonstrated that McConnell was an 9-11 “expert.” Field still has a copy of the 9-12-2001 article and offers to email it to anyone upon request.

McConnell maintains a strong, vested interest with the events of 9-11. Two USNA alums, Captain Chic Burlingame [USNA ’71] and Captain Gerald DeConto [USNA ’79], died on 9-11-2001 as a result of two separate accidents.

Captain Burlingame was a classmate of McConnell’s who perished when his AA77 vaporized over the Atlantic Ocean. Captain DeConto died 45 minutes after Captain Burlingame’s accident when the Pentagon was hit by the flying aircraft that struck a window where DeConto was stationed.
