Torture: Paradigms and Practice

This small seminar will explore the ethical, practical and political consequences of Constitutional and international law prohibiting torture in the contemporary world. The class will read philosophy and literature, look at representations of torture in art and media, analyze case law and legal memoranda, learn about forensic evidence and healing, and look inside as well as outside the United States. Students will debate and discuss states of emergency (Ireland/England, Palestine/Israel), the war on terrorism, extraterritoriality, rendition, and rape, as well as legal sanctions and proposals for torture warrants. Research paper and participation required.
