The Playfair cipher or Playfair square is a manual symmetric encryption technique and was the first literal digraph substitution cipher. The scheme was invented in 1854 by Charles Wheatstone, but bears the name of Lord Playfair who promoted the use of the cipher.

David Hawkins connects American educator and 19th century suffragist Frances Willard as the lesbian lover of Isabel Caroline Somers Cock, the former wife of Lord Henry Somerset, who was involved in a male prostitute scandal.

Per Wikipedia, Willard is identified by most modern historians as a lesbian and often clashed with progressive journalist Ida B. Wells for her stereotypical and racist remarks about African-Americans.
